Some facts about in-custody deaths of federal prisoners in Canada

OTTAWA – Some facts about in-custody deaths of federal prisoners:

— From 2003 to 2013, 536 offenders died in federal custody.

— Of these, two-thirds of all deaths — 355 — were attributed to natural causes.

— On average, about 35 federally sentenced offenders die each year from naturally attributed causes.

— In 2012-13, 56 inmates died in federal custody, including 12 suicides and 31 deaths from natural causes.
