Man falls to death while taking photos of sunset in Maine

BAR HARBOR, Maine – Park rangers say a New Jersey man has fallen to his death while trying to photograph the sunset at Acadia National Park in Maine.

Rangers said Tuesday that 68-year-old Mark Simon, of Glen Ridge, fell 40 feet from a bluff between Sand Beach and Thunder Hole.

They say his wife flagged down a ranger Monday evening when Simon failed to return after leaving her inside a car to take a photograph. Searchers located him but were unable to reach him before he was carried away by a rising tide.

Simon was a summer resident of Southwest Harbor. He was unresponsive when the Coast Guard found him.

The National Park Service says Simon’s death appears to be an accident, but it remains under investigation. An autopsy will be performed.
