Six suspects arrested in connection with attack against two Montreal police

MONTREAL – Six people, including two minors, have been arrested in connection with an alleged attack last Friday against two off-duty Montreal police officers.

One of the suspects, Melina Geoffroy, pleaded guilty Tuesday to one count of assault causing bodily harm. Police say she is co-operating with their investigation.

Montreal police say a seventh suspect has been identified, and an arrest warrant has been issued. Authorities say other arrests in the case are possible.

The two off-duty police officers were walking through a park in downtown Montreal when they approached people sitting on a patio. Police say the two were quickly surrounded and attacked.

The officers were left with multiple contusions, and one of them suffered a minor concussion.

Police say the suspects did not directly know the victims, but the officers often patrolled the neighbourhood.

Insp. Marie-Claude Dandenault said Tuesday that it’s rare for officers to be attacked by a mob.

“I have been in the police force for 21 years, and this is the first time I’ve heard about something like this,” she told reporters. “They weren’t tied to an operation, they were really there, on their free time. Police officers are human first and we have the right to go out without being attacked like that.”
