DETROIT – A 34-year-old man will be evaluated to determine if he’s competent to stand trial in the slayings of four women in Detroit whose deaths authorities have characterized as the work of a serial killer.

Prosecutors say the evaluation referral for Deangelo Martin was made Wednesday during a probable cause conference in 36th District Court. Martin is due back in court on Dec. 6.

Martin is charged with four counts of first-degree murder and four counts of felony murder in the killings of the women whose bodies were found in abandoned houses in the city as far back as February 2018.

He was arrested in June and charged in the stabbing and sexual assault of a 26-year-old woman in May and the kidnapping and assault of a 51-year-old woman in June.
