A by-the-numbers look at over-payments, excessive profits on federal contracts

OTTAWA – The federal government continues to crack down on a years-old practice of companies over-charging for work. Here’s a by-the-numbers look at some of the details in a report obtained by The Canadian Press under the Access to Information Act:

$100 million: Estimated amount owing to the government due to over-claims and “excessive profits.”

34: Number of federal auditors in the 2014-15 fiscal year that reviewed contracts for problems.

$7.3 billion: Value of the contracts auditors reviewed.

$6 million: Amount in over-payments auditors identified in 2014-15.

$66.3 million: Amount in “excessive profits” auditors identified in 2014-15.

$3.1 million: Amount recovered from companies during that time.

$2.8 million: Amount recovered from companies during the preceding 12-month period.
