Glenn Gould’s piano, chair donated to National Arts Centre

OTTAWA – Glenn Gould’s weathered Steinway piano is now a permanent fixture at the National Arts Centre.

The world renowned pianist’s items were formerly held by Library and Archives Canada.

The agency transferred the piano, and Gould’s famous wooden chair, to the National Arts Centre where it could be seen more often.

Gould’s father customized the chair for his son so he could lower it to the height he preferred, and it travelled with the pianist around the world.

Gould, who died in 1982, never played at the venue but the centre’s directors say it’s an appropriate place to celebrate his legacy.

Seventeen-year-old piano virtuoso Jan Lisiecki played the Steinway at a ceremony Wednesday.
