World champion Catharine Pendrel leads Canada’s mountain bikers into London

MONT-SAINTE-ANNE, Que. – World champion Catharine Pendrel will lead Canada’s mountain bike team into the 2012 Summer Olympics.

The Harvey Station, N.B., native is ranked first in the world in women’s mountain bike heading into London. Pendrel was fourth in the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing.

Pendrel will be joined by Emily Batty of Brooklin, Ont., in the women’s race. Geoff Kabush of Courtney, B.C., will compete in his third Olympic Games.

Victoria’s Max Plaxton was also named to the Olympic team Wednesday by Cycling Canada.

Each country is allowed a maximum of two female racers and two male racers.

Canada has won two Olympic medals in mountain biking. Alison Sydor took silver in 1996 and Marie-Helene Premont also earned a silver medal in 2004.

The Olympic women’s mountain bike race is Aug. 11, followed by the men’s event the next day.
