OTTAWA – A quick sketch of Joe Oliver, appointed finance minister on Wednesday by Prime Minister Stephen Harper:

Born: Montreal, May 20, 1940. Age 73.

Education: BA and Bachelor of Civil Law from McGill University; MBA from Harvard Graduate School of Business.

Career: Called to Quebec bar; became investment banker; served as executive director of the Ontario Securities Commission; president and CEO of Investment Dealers Association of Canada.

Politics: Conservative candidate in Toronto’s Eglinton-Lawrence riding in 2008, lost to Liberal Joe Volpe; Conservative candidate in Eglinton-Lawerence in 2011, won. Appointed minister of natural resources, May 18, 2011; appointed minister of finance March 19, 2013.

Personal: Married to Golda Goldman, two sons.
