Parti Quebecois worried election could be stolen by people from outside province

MONTREAL – The Parti Quebecois says it’s worried students from Ontario and the rest of Canada are trying to steal the provincial election.

The PQ called a news conference this morning to express concern about media reports of English-speakers and other non-francophones from outside the province trying to vote.

Leo Bureau-Blouin, a former student leader and PQ candidate, says he wants to make sure the election is decided by Quebecers and that the rules are enforced by the province’s chief electoral officer.

Some Montreal university students from elsewhere in Canada have come forward to say they were unable to register to vote but feel they should qualify.

Quebec’s chief electoral officer issued a statement on Saturday clarifying the rules.

The statement says voters must be Canadian citizens and have lived in Quebec for six months, and have the intention of making Quebec their home.
