Critics demand answers on aborted plans for Redford penthouse suite

EDMONTON – Alberta New Democrats say the government needs to come clean on costs for what was going to be a penthouse suite for former premier Alison Redford.

The NDP says taxpayers need to know what costs were incurred before the plan was abandoned and must be assured that it won’t still go ahead.

Documents obtained by the CBC reveal Redford’s office in 2012 ordered construction of a top-floor suite in a renovated building near the legislature.

The documents say the apartment was to include sleeping quarters for Redford and her daughter, a dining room, a den, a butler’s pantry and elevator access.

A government spokesman said many designs were considered for the top floor of the Federal Building, but the penthouse has been punted for boardrooms and meeting spaces.

Redford resigned as premier last week amid escalating revelations of excessive travel spending for herself and her inner circle.
