Bayern-Man United and Barcelona-Atletico both 1-1 in 1st leg of Champions League quarterfinals
MANCHESTER, England – Bastian Schweinsteiger scored in the 67th minute to offset a goal by Nemanja Vidic, then was ejected near the final whistle as defending champion Bayern Munich tied Manchester United 1-1 Tuesday night in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal.
United, seventh in the English Premier League under first-year manager David Moyes, took the lead in the 58th minute on Vidic’s header from Wayne Rooney’s corner kick.
Schweinsteiger scored on a half-volley but got his second yellow card of the game in the 90th for a foul on Rooney. Schweinsteiger had received his first yellow from Spanish referee Carlos Velasco Carballo in the 61st for fouling Michael Carrick.
In the night’s other match, Neymar’s 71st-minute goal gave Barcelona a 1-1 draw at home against Atletico Madrid in an all-Spanish matchup. The visitors went ahead on Diego Ribas’ stunning shot from about 25 yards in the 56th minute that grazed the fingertips of goalkeeper Jose Manuel Pinto as it curled into the top corner.
The hosts lost defender Gerard Pique early when he landed on his lower back and was replaced in the 12th minute. Atletico forward Diego Costa came off in the 30th because of what appeared to be a leg injury.
Second legs of the total-goals series are April 9. In first legs Wednesday, Paris Saint-Germain hosts Chelsea and Real Madrid is home against Borussia Dortmund.
