Deputy minister dresses down Russian ambassador over Ukraine: source
OTTAWA – The Harper government has once again dressed down the Russian ambassador to Canada over the situation in Ukraine.
A government source tells The Canadian Press that Russian Ambassador Georgiy Mamedov was called in for some stern words late today.
The source says Daniel Jean, the deputy minister of foreign affairs, expressed Canada’s frustration with the Russian government over the troubling situation in eastern Ukraine.
The source spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to discuss the matter publicly.
The source says Jean told Mamedov that Russia must “de-escalate the situation” and that Canada is willing to take further steps to isolate Russia both politically and economically.
Earlier this week, Prime Minister Stephen Harper blasted Russian President Vladimir Putin for what he said was provocative actions by Russia in eastern Ukraine.
