Family of homeless veteran, who died in overheated New York City jail cell, to hold funeral
NEW YORK, N.Y. – A modest funeral service has been planned for a homeless former Marine who was found dead more than two months ago in an overheated New York City jail cell.
The family of 56-year-old Jerome Murdough (muhr-DOH’) says he’ll lie in a closed casket in a Queens funeral parlour while family members say prayers on Friday.
They say his body will then be taken by hearse to a New Jersey cemetery for burial.
The medical examiner has not yet determined exactly how Murdough died. But officials told The Associated Press the mentally ill inmate was found dead Feb. 15 in a cell that was at least 100 degrees.
Three Department of Correction officials have been disciplined following the death, which Mayor Bill de Blasio (dih BLAH’-zee-oh) called “very troubling.”
