Man’s body found in Georgia Strait after weekend boating accident

VANCOUVER – More information could be released later today from RCMP in the wake of a weekend boating accident off Texada Island, in Georgia Strait.

Rescue officials say a body was pulled from waters in the northern section of the strait on Sunday night, almost 24 hours after a small boat capsized in rough weather with two people aboard.

Word of the drama surfaced Sunday afternoon when a woman in her 30s was able to seek help.

Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre spokesman Paul Tasker says the woman, a Lower Mainland resident, survived six hours in the frigid waters before reaching the shores of Texada Island.

Despite suffering extreme hypothermia, she walked for several more hours before finding a cabin where she could call for help.

She was rushed to hospital on Vancouver Island and a search for the man continued Sunday afternoon but was cancelled when a body was found, although police have not yet confirmed if the discovery is that of the missing boater. (The Canadian Press, CKNW, News1130)
