Omar Khadr continues fight for youth sentence before Alberta Court of Appeal
EDMONTON – Lawyers are back in an Edmonton courtroom arguing over where former Guantanamo Bay inmate Omar Khadr should be incarcerated.
Khadr lost his bid last fall to be transferred to a provincial jail.
His lawyer had argued the 27-year-old should be serving his sentence as a youth, not as an adult in Edmonton’s maximum-security prison.
In 2010, the Toronto-born Khadr pleaded guilty to five war crimes, including murder, for killing an American soldier in Afghanistan when he was 15.
After a decade in Gauntanamo Bay, a U.S. military commission sentenced him to an additional eight years and shipped him to Canada.
Earlier this year, Khadr was reclassified as a medium-security inmate and transferred to Bowden Institution in central Alberta.
