RALEIGH, N.C. – The original lyrics show Bruce Springsteen wasn’t thinking about Wendy when he wrote a first draft of his 1975 classic “Born to Run.” Instead, he’s got a gold Chevy 6 on his mind.
The piece of lined paper is going on display Thursday at Duke University in North Carolina. Floyd Bradley bought the lyrics at auction late last year and is letting Duke display them through the end of June.
Both Bradley’s daughter and Springsteen’s daughter are graduating this weekend from Duke.
Bradley paid $197,000 for the lyrics and says he bought them as an investment because he sees them as a piece of Americana.
The lyrics contain some familiar phrases, including the lines “tramps like us/baby we were born to run.” But most of the words are different from the final version.
