Oilsands worker in northern Alberta killed in encounter with bear

FORT MCMURRAY, Alta. – An Alberta government official says a worker has been killed by a bear at an oilsands site in northeastern Alberta.

Barry Harrison with Occupational Health and Safety says a female worker at a Suncor site north of Fort McMurray was attacked by the bear around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Harrison says Mounties destroyed the bear.

Fish and Wildlife, as well as Occupational Health and Safety officials were at the scene.

Calls to Suncor were not returned.

The name and age of the worker are being withheld.
