TORONTO – Randy Carlyle is getting another chance with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The Leafs say Carlyle will keep his job as head coach despite a late-season collapse that caused them to miss the playoffs.
The team has given him a two-year contract extension.
There was speculation that this season’s collapse would result in Carlyle’s dismissal, but general manager Dave Nonis says he and new team president Brendan Shanahan “decided together that Randy Carlyle was the right person to lead this team.”
The Leafs say assistants Dave Farrish, Greg Cronin and Scott Gordon will not be returning next season.
Toronto went 2-12-0 in its last 14 games under Carlyle after being as high as second place in the Atlantic Division.
Carlyle led the Leafs to the playoffs in the lockout-shortened 2013 season, the club’s first post-season appearance since 2004.
In parts of three seasons with Toronto, the Sudbury, Ont., native has a record of 70-62-16.
