Canadian Derek Drouin jumps to silver medal at Diamond League meet
DOHA, Qatar – Derek Drouin followed up his Canadian record performance with a silver medal in the Doha Diamond League meet on Friday.
The 24-year-old from Corunna, Ont., cleared 2.37 metres to finish second behind Ivan Ukhov of Russia (2.41).
Drouin, bronze medallist at the 2012 London Olympics, leapt 2.40 metres at the Drake Relays last month, breaking his own Canadian record and joining an elite group of high jumpers. Only 11 people in history have ever cleared 2.40 or better.
“I’m happy with tonight,” Drouin said. “I thought it was a solid rebound after my 2.40 clearance at Drake. Sometimes it’s hard to recover and back up a huge PB (personal best) like that.
“At this point in the season I’m ecstatic to continue to get looks at bars around 2.40 while at the same time gaining some experience in a close competition.”
American Erik Kynard was also awarded a silver Friday, after clearing 2.37.
