Flooding problems force evacuations in northern Ontario First Nation

KASHECHEWAN, – Flooding in the northern Ontario First Nation of Kashechewan has emergency officials scrambling to get residents to other communities.

Emergency Management Ontario says a state of emergency is in effect due to flooding from the Albany River.

The agency says some 313 evacuees have arrived in Thunder Bay, including 174 who were flown out Sunday.

Another 32 residents have been taken to Greenstone.

It says it’s unclear how many more residents could be affected.

EMO says weather conditions have hampered efforts to fly evacuees out.

A news release from the City of Thunder Bay says the city has agreed to host up to 600 evacuees.

The city says up to two-thousand members of the First Nation could be forced out of the community.

Kashechewan is located on the shore of James Bay.
