Friends of Boston Marathon bombing suspect to ask to move their trial out of Massachusetts
BOSTON – Three friends of Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev are asking a federal judge to have their cases tried outside Massachusetts.
Dias Kadyrbayev (DY’-us kah-dur-BY’-ehv), Azamat Tazhayakov (AZ’-maht tuh-ZAY’-uh-kahv) and Robel Phillipos who attended the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth with Tsarnaev are set to appear in court Tuesday.
Kazakhstan nationals Kadyrbayev and Tazhayakov are charged with taking Tsarnaev’s laptop and a backpack containing fireworks from his college dorm room shortly after last year’s bombing.
Phillipos, of Cambridge, is accused of lying to investigators. He’s asking to have his case tried separately. They’ve all pleaded not guilty.
Their lawyers say they won’t receive fair trials in Massachusetts because of media coverage, but prosecutors disagree.
Tsarnaev has pleaded not guilty to 30 federal charges in the bombing that killed three and injured more than 260.
