Montreal concert celebrates 40th anniversary of 1976 Summer Olympics
MONTREAL – A free orchestral concert Aug. 10 celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Montreal Summer Olympics is expected to draw tens of thousands of spectators, tourism officials say.
The Orchestre symphonique de Montreal, conducted by Kent Nagano, will perform on the esplanade outside Olympic Stadium.
Some 100 young Quebec athletes will take part in the evening show, dubbed “Galaxy of Heroes,” as archival images of the 1976 Games are projected on a giant screen. The program includes excerpts from Gustav Holst’s “The Planets.”
Tourism Montreal is calling it “a spectacular symphonic event in celebration of the Olympic spirit.”
The concert is part of the orchestra’s Classical Spree Festival, or La Viree Classique, from Aug. 10 to 13. Three other free outdoor shows at the Quartier des Spectacles are planned, as well as a series of ticketed indoor concerts at Place des Arts.
