California man convicted in jail lobby shooting
FRESNO, Calif. – A jury has convicted a California man of attempted murder in the shooting of two unarmed officers in the lobby of a county jail.
The Fresno Bee reports that Fresno County jurors returned the verdict against 38-year-old Thong Vang on Thursday, rejecting his claim of self-defence.
Authorities say Vang shot officers Juanita Davila and Toamalama Scanlan in 2016 when they approached him after he cut to the front of the visitors’ line at the downtown Fresno jail.
Scanlan’s wife, Tespatasi, testified that her husband can no longer walk, talk or feed himself. Davila was shot in the neck and said she still needs another surgery to mend her broken jaw.
Vang had prior rape convictions. Prosecutors say he is now facing a sentence of more than 100 years in prison.
