Saudi Arabia revises MERS infection numbers upward; 688 infections and 282 deaths confirmed
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – Saudi state media says the kingdom has sharply revised upward the number of confirmed infections and deaths from the Middle Eastern respiratory virus.
The official Saudi Press Agency on Tuesday reported that authorities have registered a total of 688 confirmed infections and 282 deaths as a result of MERS. Of those infected, it says 53 are still receiving treatment.
The Saudi Health Ministry’s most recent tally of cases, updated daily on its website, listed 575 cases and 190 deaths.
MERS is part of the coronavirus family of viruses, which includes the common cold and SARS, or severe acute respiratory syndrome. MERS can cause symptoms including fever, breathing problems, pneumonia and kidney failure.
Saudi Arabia has been the epicenter for the disease.
