LONG HARBOUR, N.L. – Mining giant Vale says crane operators working on the construction of its nickel processing facility in southern Newfoundland have gone on strike.
A spokesman for the company says the strike in Long Harbour started around 6 a.m. today.
Bob Carter says it’s preventing between 1,800 and 2,000 workers from accessing the site.
Carter wouldn’t comment on possible reasons for the strike.
He says the company is working on an injunction to stop the strike, which it expects to file later today.
Once the project is completed, it’s expected to employ 450 workers during its operation.
