Short list announced for Sobey Art Award celebrating Canadian contemporary art
HALIFAX – The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia and the Sobey Art Foundation have announced the finalists for this year’s Sobey Art Award.
The short list of artists vying for the prize includes Vancouver-based Evan Lee, the Winnipeg team of Neil Farber and Michael Dumontier, Toronto’s Chris Curreri, Nadia Myre of Montreal and Graeme Patterson from Sackville, N.B.
The annual $50,000 award was created in 2002 to celebrate contemporary Canadian art.
Work by the finalists will be displayed in an exhibition at the Winnipeg Art Gallery starting Nov. 1, with the winner to be announced at a gala event on Nov. 19.
The other finalists will be awarded $10,000.
The Sobey Art Award is given to a Canadian artist age 40 or under who has exhibited in a public or commercial gallery within 18 months of being nominated.
Artists are chosen to represent the West Coast and the Yukon, Prairies and the North, Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada.
