Smoke from massive wildfire in Canada blows into Montana
GREAT FALLS, Mont. – Smoke from the massive wildfire that’s burning in Fort McMurray, Alberta, has blown south and is now affecting air quality in Montana.
The Great Falls Tribune reports (http://gftrib.com/1WfpNTq ) that state Department of Environmental Quality officials say the smoke arrived in Montana on Thursday and Friday and is worst in Malta down to Billings. Malta is located 935 miles south of Fort McMurray and Billings is another 143 miles south.
Air quality officials say at worst, air quality in Billings and Malta was “unhealthy” and that the smoke should clear throughout the day.
Officials say this is the fourth year in a row that the first air impacts from wildfires in the state have come from fires in Canada, not Montana.
