Day use of park closed by August flooding to reopen Dec 1

SPRINGFIELD, La. – Louisiana’s lieutenant governor says “day use” of a state park closed by August floods will resume Dec. 1.

Billy Nungesser said in a news release Monday that Tickfaw State Park ‘s nature centre, rental pavilions, playground, restrooms and canoe rentals will reopen.

However, many hiking trails will remain closed for repairs.

Nungesser says the water playground is scheduled to reopen in April, and repairs to campgrounds and many structures will take longer.

The low-lying 1,200-acre park is about 7 miles southwest of Springfield in Livingston Parish. It occasionally serves as a detention pond for rainfall that overflows the Tickfaw River’s steep banks.

But park manager Cody Westmoreland tells The Advocate (http://bit.ly/2ga4bcW) that the downpours in August flooded 99.8 per cent of the park, including some areas had never held water before.
