New Orleans 300th art: forgotten, marginalized history

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Museum of Art plans to celebrate the city’s tricentennial with an exhibition of seven contemporary projects that focus on forgotten or marginalized history.

They include two pieces originally created for Prospect New Orleans, the city’s triennial art festival. One of them commemorates the 32 men killed by a fire set at a New Orleans gay bar in 1973. The other is a 21-minute video that begins with Vietnam’s fantastical funeral processions.

There’s also an installation inspired by the life and work of New Orleans missionary and folk artist Gertrude Morgan.

Artists are Skylar Fein, The Propeller Group, Lesley Dill, Katrina Andry, Willie Birch, L. Kasimu Harris, and The Everyday Projects.

“Changing Course: Reflecting on New Orleans Histories” run from June 29 through Sept. 16.
