Jury ends 1st day, no verdict for 3 cops in Floyd killing
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Jurors at the federal trial of three fired Minneapolis police officers charged with violating George Floyd’s civil rights went home Wednesday without reaching a verdict. It was the first day of deliberations in the case against J. Alexander Kueng, Thomas Lane and Tou Thao. They’re charged with depriving Floyd of his right to medical care when he was pinned to the ground for 9 1/2 minutes as fellow Officer Derek Chauvin pressed his knee into 46-year-old Black man’s neck. Kueng and Thao are also charged with failing to intervene to stop Chauvin during the May 25, 2020, killing. Jurors will resume deliberations Thursday. All 12 members of the jury appear to be white.

Judge seals juror names in 3 cops’ trial over Floyd killing
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — The judge overseeing the federal trial of three former Minneapolis police officers charged with violating George Floyd’s civil rights has sealed the names of the jurors for at least 10 years. U.S. District Judge Paul Magnuson issued the order around five hours after the jury began deliberations Wednesday. He wrote that the court assured prospective jurors that their personal information would be kept confidential. He said federal law allows him to do so “in the interests of justice.” He said this is “clearly” such a case due to the “significant public attention this trial has generated.”
FOREVER CHEMICALS-MINNESOTA
Minnesota bills to ban ‘forever chemicals’ in more products
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — A Minnesota House committee on Wednesday considered three bills that would ban a family of chemicals known as PFAS from cosmetics, cookware and ski wax. The family of chemicals are sometimes called “forever chemicals” because they persist in the environment. Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances are a broad term for manmade chemicals that were designed to make products resistant to heat, oil, stains, grease and water. Opponents of the bill contend that the language in the bills describing the chemicals is too broad and would apply to hundreds with different properties. All three bills passed in committee and head for their next committee stop.

Suspect arrested in May shooting death of Minneapolis girl
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A suspect has been arrested a suspect in the May 2021 death of a 9-year-old Minneapolis girl who was shot while jumping on an outdoor trampoline. Investigators believe the victim was an unintended target of a gang-related drive-by shooting. Ottoson-Smith was playing in the backyard of a friend’s home on May 15 when she was shot. She died from her injuries 12 days later. The girl was one of three children shot in Minneapolis last summer within a span of several weeks. The suspect has not been formally charged.

Locke’s 17-year-old cousin has also been charged in the Jan. 10 killing of Otis Elder in St. Paul. (AP) — A suburban Minneapolis high school has informed New Prague athletics officials that it will not compete in any further games against its teams this year because of racial taunting. St. Louis Park athletics director Andrew Ewald sent an email to his counterpart at New Prague which said the ban “will continue until the harm that was caused is repaired and we are assured that any of our stakeholders, most importantly our students, will not be victimized by racism by any New Prague stakeholder in the future.” Ewald said students in St. Louis Park High School’s boys hockey program were subjected to racist taunts Feb. 15 while in New Prague, a small community southwest of the Twin Cities.

Ahmaud Arbery’s hometown hopes for change after convictions
BRUNSWICK, Ga. (AP) — Back-to-back convictions of the men who chased and killed Ahmaud Arbery have bolstered civil rights activists who viewed the case as a test of the criminal justice system. A jury returned federal hate crime convictions against father and son Greg and Travis McMichael and their neighbor, William “Roddie” Bryan on Tuesday, the day before the second anniversary of Arbery’s death. The verdicts came three months after the same white men were convicted of murder in a Georgia state court. Arbery was 25 years old when he was chased by pickup trucks and fatally shot in a subdivision outside Brunswick, Georgia, on Feb. 23, 2020.
