Children’s minister, watchdog unite to urge more adoption from B.C. ministry

VICTORIA – British Columbia’s children and family development ministry and the province’s independent representative for children and youth say B.C.’s adoption rates for children in government care must increase dramatically.

Children’s Minister Stephanie Cadieux and children’s representative Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond held a joint news conference today to outline a six-point strategy.

It is not often that Cadieux and Turpel-Lafond hold joint news conferences, as they are often at odds over child-protection issues.

But Turpel-Lafond released a report today to assist the government in improving adoption rates and outcomes.

The report says over a six-year period dating back to 2007, adoption placements by the children’s ministry declined by a third.

It also appeals to First Nations leaders to step forward and encourage more aboriginal families to consider adoptions.
