RIO DE JANEIRO – Two people have been killed and three others injured during a shootout between police and suspected drug traffickers in a Rio de Janeiro slum frequently visited by tourists.
The G1 news portal says the firefight in the Complexo de Alemao slum began Sunday night when heavily armed criminals fired on police investigating a report that an unidentified man was being beaten up.
G1 said Monday that two suspected traffickers were killed. Two police officers and an adolescent boy were injured.
Complexo de Alemao has long been a hub for criminal activity. It was occupied by police in 2012 as part of an effort to clean up and boost investment in more than 1,000 shantytowns in metropolitan Rio.
