NY judge orders Skater Oksana Baiul to pay legal fees for dismissed lawsuit against NBC
NEW YORK, N.Y. – A New York judge has ordered figure skater Oksana Baiul (by-YOOL’) to pay legal fees she caused NBC to incur when she sued the company.
In awarding fees of at least $35,000 to NBC Universal Media and NBC Sports Network, Manhattan U.S. District Judge Katherine Forrest noted the frivolous nature of the lawsuit the 1994 Olympic gold medallist filed last year.
She says Baiul made “wild claims” she was owed tens of millions of dollars in lost profits after being accidentally mentioned in publicity about a show she did not skate in.
The skater had claimed her reputation was damaged because the incorrect publicity resulted in her being labeled a “no show,” making it harder to get work.
Baiul’s lawyer and NBC haven’t returned messages seeking comment.
