Hazardous material leaks into Kelowna storm sewer

KELOWNA — Kelowna Fire Department responded to a hazardous material leak near a produce wholesaler yesterday evening.

A mechanical malfunction caused a refrigerant to discharge onto Vaughan Avenue, a media release says. 

Crews responded to the call from the Ministry of Environment at about 7:28 p.m. yesterday, March 29. The fire department's release says the spill came from 880 Vaughan Ave., which is listed as B.C. Tree Fruits Cooperative

About 125 litres of the product, Propylene Glycol, had leaked into the storm sewer.

City utilities came to vacuum the spill and sandbag equipment was also dispatched.

The product was removed from the storm sewer and the roadway was sanded. The spill was contained to the storm sewer area on Vaughan and did not spread to the surrounding area.
