Rwanda appeals against disqualification from African Cup for player with 2 identities

CAIRO – The Confederation of African Football says Rwanda has appealed against its disqualification from African Cup qualifying for fielding a striker who was using two identities.

CAF says Rwanda’s appeal will be heard on Wednesday. The final round of qualifiers begins on Sept. 5.

CAF announced this week that it had thrown out Rwanda over its fielding of forward Dady Birori, who was ineligible to play for the country because he was using two different identities when playing international and club football. CAF said Birori was playing under another name for his Congolese club AS Vita and using a different, Congolese, passport and a different date of birth.

The African football body reinstated Republic of Congo in the qualifying competition in the place of Rwanda.
