$100 bills showing Okanagan Lake are still around after 75 years; readers respond

We asked if any old $100 bills showing Okanagan Lake still existed out there and readers responded: Absolutely.

Earlier this week, INFOnews.ca told you about a vignette of Okanagan Lake on the Bank of Canada’s 1954 ‘Landscape Series’. The bills are familar to some Okanagan residents, even if they are 75 years old.

The back of the 1954 era bill depicts a scene of Okanagan Lake from a photograph believed to have been taken in the Campbell Mountain area.

A reader named Terry responded to say he has one of the bills, while another reader named Joy said she has three.

Another reader named Tyler sent us a photograph from an area on Campbell Mountain where he walks his dog that looks very similar to the vantage point of the National Film Board photograph that inspired the bill. It’s not as picturesque a landscape in modern times as it used to be, however, with a high voltage power line now running through the area.

Another reader named Peter also wrote us to say he has a few from his father’s collection.

“Once I saw your picture in your article I immediately knew that I had some. It is very recognizable,” he says.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
