Sheriff’s officials report first death from earthquake that shook California wine country
SAN FRANCISCO – Sheriff’s officials have reported the first death linked to last month’s magnitude-6.0 earthquake in California’s wine country.
The Sheriff’s Office says 65-year-old Laurie Anne Thompson was struck in the head by a television while at her Napa home during the Aug. 24 quake. She did not go to the hospital until the next day when she felt dizzy and experienced a decline in mental function.
Sheriff’s officials say she died Friday of an intracranial hemorrhage.
The earthquake did not claim any other lives, but left scores of people injured, among them a 13-year-old boy who broke his pelvis in several places when part of a chimney collapsed on him.
The quake caused extensive damage in the Napa Valley and the nearby city of Vallejo.
