Steppenwolf Theatre Company taps Anna D. Shapiro as artistic leader and will upgrade campus

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Steppenwolf Theatre Company is fixing up its Chicago home and making a change in its artistic leadership.

The respected company said Thursday that Martha Lavey, the theatre’s artistic director since 1995, will be replaced by longtime ensemble member and award-winning Broadway director Anna D. Shapiro.

Shapiro won the Tony Award for directing Tracy Letts’ “August: Osage County,” helmed the Michael Cera-led “This Is Our Youth,” now playing in New York, and will soon turn to a play written by comedian Larry David. She will take over at Steppenwolf in fall 2015.

The company also said it will add two new buildings on campus — a 400-seat flexible theatre and a black box space. Steppenwolf stages 16 productions a year on three stages and attracts an annual audience of 200,000 people.
