Surge in Sierra bears reported as hungry bruins seek food; 10 trapped in 1 day at Reno-Tahoe

RENO, Nev. – An already busy bear season has exploded in the Sierra with 10 hungry bruins captured in a single day this week near Reno and Lake Tahoe as drought continues to make food scarce.
Nevada wildlife officials trapped a mother bear and two cubs just west of Reno on Wednesday morning, then another sow and two cubs on Tahoe’s south shore at Stateline on Wednesday afternoon.
Since July 1, they’ve caught 42 bears and released all but two back to the wild. An additional 10 have been killed by cars as they move into more populated areas.
State wildlife spokesman Chris Healy says a surge in activity is expected with cooler temperatures this time of year, when a typical bear’s food intake jumps from 3,000 to 25,000 calories a day. That’s the human equivalent of 83 cheeseburgers.
