Sun Peaks building course for mountain carts; set to debut in 2015

KAMLOOPS, B.C. – Take a go-cart, remove the engine, and steer the contraption down a mountain.

That gives you a rough idea of a new activity that Sun Peaks plans to introduce next summer.

The B.C. Interior resort is building what it says is North America’s first Mountain Cross Cart coursea winding, half-kilometre-long track down which riders will average speeds of 35 kilometres an hour.

Runs will be timed, allowing users to race against the clock. An existing lift will bring carts and riders back to the top of the course.

The carts offer “a high level of safety thanks to powerful disc brakes, four-point seat belts, roll bars and padded seats,” the resort said. Participants will require a valid driver’s licence.

Nine Mountain Cross Cart parks are in operation around the world, including in Sweden, Norway, Estonia and Finland, Sun Peaks said.

The new MCC Action Park, set to debut in June 2015, will complement other summer attractions including the resort’s bike park and golf course, said Jamie Tattersfield, Sun Peaks’ head of mountain operations.
