Cyclist shot, police seek public help

LYTTON – Police are looking to the public to help find the person who shot a cyclist on Highway 1, three kilometers south of Spences Bridge Sunday.

The seemingly random shooting happened at about 1 a.m. June 1. The cyclist was participating in the Cache Creek 600, a two-day cycling marathon from Pitt Meadows to Cache Creek that began at 7 a.m. Saturday morning, according to B.C. Randonneurs Cycling Club's website.

RCMP say someone apparently fired several shots at a 59-year-old Burnaby man riding south along the highway. The cyclist and the bike were each hit once. It's believed the suspect then fled in a pickup truck.

The cyclist's injuries were serious, but non-life-threatening. He was found shortly after by other cyclists participating in the event. He was taken to hospital. He has been released.

The investigation continues and Mounties hope someone witnessed the event or knows who may be responsible for the shooting.
