Women rock climbers headline Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival

BANFF, Alta. – Two of the biggest names in rock climbing, American Lynn Hill and Catherine Destivelle of France, will headline the 41st Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival, organizers announced.

The women are known for trailblazing ascents of peaks including the Eiger and the Matterhorn in the Alps and for record-breaking speed climbs.

The festival, to run from Oct. 29 to Nov. 6, will showcase more than 75 films. Its competitions, focusing on mountain subjects such as climbing and natural history, garner entries from around the world.

Canadian climber Sonnie Trotter, U.S. snowboarder Jeremy Jones, Russian alpinist Denis Urubko and U.K. poet Helen Mort are among presenters lined up for the nine-day event, hosted by the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity.

A selection of the films will later be packaged in the festival’s annual world tour.
