Autopsy: Man killed by Chicago-area police was shot 5 times

CHICAGO – An autopsy by the Cook County medical examiner’s office has determined that a man killed by suburban Chicago police was shot five times, including once in the back.

Donte Jones of Maywood, a father of four, was celebrating a friend’s birthday at a nightclub in Markham Oct. 2, when he was shot by a police officer responding to a fight in the parking lot.

Markham Police Chief Mack Sanders has said the officer believed his safety was at risk from an armed man “in close proximity” and shot him. Sanders says the officer has been placed on modified duty pending an investigation into the shooting.

The Chicago Tribune reports that toxicology results showed Jones had a blood-alcohol level of .042, below the .08 legal limit to drive.
