Carlyle says Leafs following protocol as Winnik won’t play vs. Rangers

TORONTO – Daniel Winnik will not play for the Maple Leafs against the Rangers on Saturday night, two days after taking a headfirst fall.

Toronto coach Randy Carlyle said the team was following NHL and NHLPA protocol by holding Winnik out.

Josh Leivo, recalled from the AHL on an emergency basis Friday, is expected to replace Winnik in the lineup.

Winger Phil Kessel, who missed parts of Thursday’s third period at the Avalanche with an undisclosed injury, will play, Carlyle said.
