OTTAWA – The Ottawa-based Communications Security Establishment, which gathers foreign intelligence through advanced technical means, has liaison offices abroad in keeping with its Five Eyes network role. Here’s a look at the timeline:
February 1949: First Canadian Special Liaison Office, or CANSLO, at Government Communications Headquarters in Britain.
February 1950: First CANSLO at the U.S. Armed Forces Security Agency (now U.S. National Security Agency).
July 2009: First CANSLO at the Defense Signals Directorate (now Australian Signals Directorate), which also provides representation to New Zealand’s Government Communications Security Bureau.
