Man United, Liverpool managers call for end to sick terrace chanting after Hillsborough report
MANCHESTER, England – The managers of Manchester United and Liverpool have urged their clubs’ fans to end their distasteful chants at matches in the wake of the release of findings about the Hillsborough tragedy.
The rivalry between England’s two most successful teams has often spilled over into goading on the terraces, with some United fans singing songs about the Hillsborough tragedy and a section of Liverpool fans taunting their counterparts about the Munich air disaster in 1958 in which eight United players died.
United manager Alex Ferguson says on Friday that the latest revelations about the incident that resulted in 96 Liverpool fans being killed at Hillsborough in 1989 “is a line in the sand in terms of how the supporters behave with one another.”
Liverpool hosts United on Sept. 23.
