Canada’s Bianca Andreescu advances to second round of qualifying at Rogers Cup

MONTREAL – Bianca Andreescu is the last Canadian remaining with a chance to qualify for the women’s main draw of the Roger Cup after beating Samantha Crawford of the United States on Saturday.

Andreescu downed Crawford 7-6 (3), 7-5 to advance to the second round of the qualifying portion of the tournament.

The 16-year-old Andreescu, from Mississauga, Ont., will face Ukraine’s Kateryna Bondarenko on Sunday. A victory would move her into the main draw, which begins first-round action on Monday.

Saturday was a difficult day for Canadian women’s qualifiers, with 10 of the 11 participants dropping their matches.

Catherine Leduc fell 6-0, 6-1 against Veronica Cepede Royg of Paraguay while Carol Zhao was beaten by American Christina McHale 6-2, 6-3.

Slovakia’s Kristina Kucova toppled Erin Routcliffe 6-1, 6-2. American Irina Falconi downed Tiffany Lagarde 6-3, 6-1. China’s Saisai Zheng beat Isabelle Boulais 6-3, 6-1. Julia Glushko of Israel eliminated Maria Patrascu 6-2, 6-0. Marie Leduc lost to Columbia’s Mariana Duque-Marino 6-2, 6-2. Petra Januskova fell to Julia Boserup of the U.S. 6-2, 6-4.

Gabriela Dabrowski lost to Italy’s Camila Giorgi 6-3, 6-1 and China’s Shuai Zhang beat Charlotte Robillard-Millette 6-4, 6-3.

Canada has three players in the main draw so far.

Eugenie Bouchard of Westmount, Que., is set to face veteran Lucie Safarova in the first round. Aleksandra Wozniak of Blainville, Que., who has slipped to 472nd in the world after a succession of injuries, has a tough task in 25th-ranked Italian Sara Errani. And teenager Francoise Abanda of Montreal takes on Elina Svitolina of Ukraine.
