J.K. Simmons wins Golden Globe for best supporting actor

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. – J.K. Simmons has won the Golden Globe for best supporting actor for “Whiplash.”

Simmons plays a jazz band instructor who uses humiliation, fear and cruelty to motivate his students — especially Miles Teller, who co-stars as an ambitious aspiring jazz drummer.

The other nominees Sunday were: Robert Duvall, “The Judge”; Ethan Hawke, “Boyhood”; Edward Norton, “Birdman”; and Mark Ruffalo, “Foxcatcher.”

The 72nd annual Golden Globes are airing live from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, with hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.
