Calgary symposium says stronger community support key to preventing suicide

CALGARY – The co-chair of a steering committee on suicide prevention says stronger community support is the key to cutting down on Alberta’s high suicide rate.

Patty Restoule (res-TOOL’) told a symposium in Calgary that the province’s rate of 12.4 deaths for every 100,000 people is the third-highest in the country.

Author and mental health advocate Lee Horbachewski (HOR’-buh-SHEW’-skee) said she receives messages from individuals contemplating suicide who don’t know where to turn for help.

Aboriginal youths in remote communities still make up the largest at-risk group.

Psychologist Derian Thira (THEER’-uh) said he doesn’t dwell on the causes of suicide, but works with band elders to try to get the entire community involved in healing.
