Man arrested in Mexico for sex with Minnesota teen in 2000

MOORHEAD, Minn. (AP) — A man accused of having sex with a 14-year-old girl has been apprehended in Mexico 21 years after he fled following his arrest in Minnesota. Curtis Lee Brovold met the girl from Moorhead, Minnesota, online in 2000. Brovold was arrested later that year but failed to show up for a court hearing. Moorhead police detectives and FBI investigators from Fargo, North Dakota, determined that Brovold was living in Cancun. The 67-year-old Brovold was arrested without incident outside his home there on Wednesday afternoon. He will be returned to the United States and is expected to be transferred to the custody of Moorhead law enforcement.

Judge agrees to delay state trial for 3 cops in Floyd death

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A Minnesota judge has agreed to delay a state court trial for three former Minneapolis police officers charged in George Floyd’s death, though he didn’t immediately set a date. Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill told attorneys to agree on a new date that’s within one year. They must inform the court by Sunday. Cahill said if they cannot agree, the trial will remain set for March 7. Thomas Lane, J. Kueng and Tou Thao face charges of aiding and abetting both murder and manslaughter. Their attorneys and prosecutors sought to delay the trial because the three first have a federal trial on Jan. 20 on charges alleging they violated Floyd’s civil rights.

Walz seeks $40M for hospital staffing amid COVID-19 surge

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said Wednesday that he wants to use $40 million in federal funding to support emergency staffing at hospitals that are straining to cope with a surge in COVID-19 cases that is expected to get worse. Walz on Wednesday announced his request to fund the hiring of nurses to work 60 hours per week for 60 days at hospitals experiencing shortages due to the virus. The request follows another $40 million Walz wants to put toward expanding testing. Both requests come out of $500 million in American Rescue Plan state funds for immediate COVID-19 response.

Trial scheduled in fatal health clinic shooting in Minnesota

BUFFALO, Minn. (AP) — A jury trial has been scheduled for a Minnesota man accused of walking into a medical clinic and opening fire, killing one staff member and wounding four others last year. Gregory Ulrich will stand trial beginning May 16 on charges of murder, attempted murder and other counts in the Feb. 9 shooting at the Allina Health Clinic in Buffalo, a small city about 40 miles northwest of Minneapolis. Wright County Attorney Brian Lutes said Wednesday that four weeks have been set aside for the case because it’s anticipated that jury selection will take a considerable amount of time. Ulrich is also accused of setting off several pipe bombs at the clinic before eventually surrendering to law enforcement.

Human remains found in 2003 belong to man missing since 1970

CAMBRIDGE, Minn. (AP) — Sheriff’s officials say human remains found buried in Isanti County in 2003 have finally been identified as a 22-year-old man missing since 1970. According to the Isanti County Sheriff’s Office, investigators have long believed Donald Rindahl was a homicide victim, but his death has been classified as undetermined. The skeletal remains were discovered in August 2003 near Cambridge during an excavation project. Investigators have used DNA from the remains over the years to make identification, but were not successful until turning to a Texas lab last year that uses newer technology. It was able to develop a match with a relative, which led authorities to Rindahl’s identification.

Hurt serval cat found in Boston to go to Minnesota sanctuary

BOSTON (AP) — An African serval cat found injured in a Boston suburb last week will go to a wild cat sanctuary in Minnesota if an amputation proceeds as anticipated. The Springfield Republican reported the male cat dubbed “Bruno,” will go to The Wildcat Sanctuary in Sandstone, Minnesota. The cat was found in a backyard in Lincoln, Massachusetts, with a back limb broken in two places. The humane society MSPCA says serval cats are not allowed to be owned in Massachusetts except by zoos with a permit. It will undergo an operation to amputate its back leg before going on to the sanctuary in Minnesota.

Marquardt joins House members who won’t seek reelection

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — The number of Minnesota state lawmakers who don’t plan to seek reelection continues to grow. Longtime Rep. Paul Marquart joined the list Wednesday. The Democrat was first elected to the House 22 years ago after serving as Dilworth’s mayor for 11 years. Marquardt says that at age 65 it’s time to try new things. He’s the fourth state lawmaker in just the past week to announce he won’t seek reelection, following Rep. Tim Miller, Rep. Jim Davnie and Rep. Rod Hamilton.

American Indian Movement leader Clyde Bellecourt dies at 85

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Clyde Bellecourt, a leader in the Native American struggle for civil rights and a founder of the American Indian Movement, has died. He was 85. Bellecourt died Tuesday morning from cancer at his home in Minneapolis. Bellecourt was a co-founder in 1968 of AIM, which began as a local organization in Minneapolis that sought to grapple with issues of police brutality and discrimination against Native Americans. The group would lead a string of major national protests in the 1970s, including a 71-day occupation in 1973 of Wounded Knee, South Dakota, to highlight corruption on the reservation and federal injustices against Indians.
